Formula Drift Singapore 4th-5th July 2009


DAY 1

We decided to leave to Singapore a day earlier,as we had to be at the track at 12pm the next day and we wanted  to settle some logistics matters  and meet a few people before that.. We managed to timed everything to perfection but  was held back by the decal shop fiasco which I shall not elaborate here. We finally got to Singapore at 8pm which was already too late to do anything . So we decided to check in , grab something to eat and call it a night..

DAY 2

We arrived at the track  at 10am. The course looked  intimidating damn  scary, especially with the concrete walls lining the entrance of the track. What worried me the most was the man hole cover that causes cars to unsettle mid way through the first outer clipping point. Ivan Lim , Cheaka and I all had our cars pointing straight mid drift during the media promo day, which  had us plowing  straight through the cones lining the outer track . Those cones are now being replaced by concrete walls which I am certain would not be as forgiving ..

The stunt show rehearsal ,scheduled today,was canceled due to a few drivers involved were not being able to arrive today. So instead ,we did  our drift taxi ride practice. To keep it fair to the other drifters, we were no allowed to  practice on the full course  and and   not use the official starting point ,we were instructed to  begin our runs mid way through  the first corner. As the  organizers and sponsors were watching us practice,  so it was also   a rehearsal as they would hate for any unpleasant surprises to happen tomorrow.

Cheaka , Yoong , Sean and I only got about 4 runs each before it started to rain heavily. So we decided to call it quits. It was about that time the Goodyear Thai drivers arrived.  We helped them unload and just hung out where I got the chance to brush up on my Thai-glish.

DAY 3

Media day!!! We arrived at the track at 8am and promptly got suited up. All the drivers representing Goodyear were present for the press conference .Thailand , Malaysia , Singapore and Hong Kong were all represented!

It was all fine a till I arrived   back to the pits. Leong comes up to me and says ” Bro, I got bad news!!”  The first thought that went through my mind was that I have some mechanical trouble or even worse ,blown my engine again. He then informed me that they had allocated the wrong tires to me!!! This came to be a big blow as I had used what little tires  that we brought over from Malaysia and the tires that we got for Cheaka which were too narrow ( width) for me.It is not uncommon for stuff like this to happen on an event as large as this ; tyres were being  allocated and distributed to all the Goodyear drivers and a minor glitch such as this is bound to happen.  Marcus, bless his soul, tried his best to resolve the situation by getting Yoong to agree to give half of his allocation to me ( Thanks Yoong ) but with stunt shows , taxi rides and practice runs coming ahead, I knew they were not enough. So I decided to use Cheaka tires instead ..Hell, I made it through last year with three cylinder, I reckon running on narrow  rears won’t be much of a trouble especially since they were Goodyear RevSpecs, which  is known to be grippier  when comparing with other brands of the same tyre width  . However, it will a bit difficult if it rained as the physical size and  width does play an important role when it comes to grip in the wet  . I just brushed the thought off and was glad the engine is still running fine!

DAY 4

We were all nervous about the concrete barrier that lined both the outer clipping points and the fact that the man hole cover that tend to throw our cars out of line didn’t help either.Though the reduced grip level was apparent , I got used to running on Cheaka’s tyres after a couple of runs.Both of us took conservative lines  during our runs and we managed to keep our cars in one piece for the first practice session. Cheaka was nailing all her runs and managed to impress the Formula D judges Andy Yen and Tony Angelo!

On practice session  two   it began to rain!! Practice was held up for a moment  in order for the track to dry up.When they finally did let us off on the track , it was only partially dried up with wet patches dotting around the course. This made the grip level varied through out the course .The tires on my car  performed exceptionally well but I had to dramatically change my driving style to suit the slippery condition. During this session ,Cheaka was unlucky as she drifted over one of those slippery wet   patches which caused her to spin and rear end on  to the  concrete wall at the second rear clipping zone .To stiffen Cheaka’s car, besides the roll cage, we had mounted a  brace at the rear of the car which  connects the rear  chassis  to  the rear suspension tower. The force of the  impact of the crash  had caused the brace to move the tower thus causing her right  rear absorbers and  rear wheel knuckle .to move almost and inch forward!! She was struggling with the car throughout the session after the incident!  Upon requesting, I was allowed to test drive her car   found that the  car was experiencing   under steer each time it was drifted to the left. As we didn’t have the right tools to straighten out the chassis and tower neither did we want to risk adjusting the rear caster and making it worse, I suggested that she just increase the rear tire pressure to reduce  the understeer and try to adapt to it.

Many  Singaporeans in attendance were interested in the  sport  and many were eager to get involved. With Binter and Formula Drift Holdings continuing paving the path, I’m sure we will be getting more Singaporeans participating next year!!

Competition day!! We were all buzzing from excitement as this is the day that we were waiting for!! 37 drifters top drifters from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong kong, China and Indonesia going head to head against each other!

Practice was good and I basically went 7/10 after seeing Ivan Lau’s crash on his first run. Thankfully Ivan managed to get his car fixed in time for qualifying. Qualifying was a straight forward affair. I did what I thought was one of my best run on the track but  was really disappointed when informed that I had 74.5 points on my run. I got out of the car , took off my helmet and gloves of and just sat on the curb . Back in Malaysia with a score like that you might not even make it to top 16. However , amazingly my score remained highest till it was qualifying round 2!! By the end of round 2, my score was ranked third highest behind Tat Wei and Djan!

It was a huge shock to find out that Ivan Lim failed to qualify. Based on his practice runs ,he was definitely one of the favorites for the weekend. However, situation like this do happen and it was unfortunate to have happened to someone who is a good as Ivan. I am sure his luck would be better for the up coming rounds!!

TANDEM BATTLE

I was paired of with Shah from Singapore. An aggressive drifter which I know will be a tough fight during tsuiso. Since I qualified 3rd ,my battle with Shah would be the 7th pairing. So I decided to chill out in the car and poke fun at Jenshen (RyuK1d)  who was my umbrella boy :). To my horror it started to rain!!!! Aww man!! Images of me spinning out during entry started to flash in my head!!! They had to stop the tandem battle to wait for the rain to stop. When the rain begin to ease off a bit,they sent us out in a group to help dissipate any standing water  on the track.  The track however appeared to be alot wetter than the day before! I love the wet and I have done numerous tandem battles in the wet but never on my current setup before! I drove out on the track and tired to initiate at my normal  speed and aggression  but only to have spun  at the entry!! Thankfully I managed to avoid the wall.. That run definitely didn’t do much for nerves!

Watching Ivan Lau and Zee’s run didn’t help either. These are the two drivers that I looked up to and was shocked to witness the incident that wiped both of these drivers out! Ivan totaled the rear of his car trying to avoid Zee’s spin. Zee is one of Malaysia’s top drifter and he hardly spins!! I am unsure what was the ruling on the incident but both of the drivers were put out of contention

All I could do was grit my teeth and hum the theme song to ‘Barney’ to calm my nerves….

Not long after it was soon my turn to step up to the plate.I did my run with Shah as conservative as possible and managed to advance to the next round

Top 8 was against another top Singaporean drifter Jensen Tan. Jensen Tan is an animal of an opponent. With his circuit racing experience I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I somehow managed to do both runs without any major corrections and advanced to top 4.

Top 4 was against Tengku Djan.Being an owner of hachiroukus  and I know what they are capable of   in the wet.  So we lined up at the start, both of left the line together but as soon as Djan floored the throttle I struggled to get grip. He was three cars ahead of me when we reached the entry and which was maintained all the way to the finish

At the lead I knew I had to go all out , I entered the first corner as fast as I could  but I gingerly dumped the clutch when it came to initiation! To my suprise the car didn’t respond as I expected  and just went straight. I dumped again ,harder this time, and managed to stick the tail out. But this has caused me to go slightly off line when suddenly the front tires just washed off and made me spin!!

I was filled with mixed emotion, I was sad I was not able to put up a good fight with Djan but then I was happy to at least be able to share the podium with him. Team mate Johan Norman managed to breeze his way to the finals and and bagged 2nd spot, which was a fantastic for Goodyear!!

He was there whenever we needed him; from getting soapy water for the decals to his picture taking duties ( the majority of the pictures we see here) He somehow manage to make everyone happy and ‘GAY’ whenever he was around. Thanks buddy, We won’t forget this

Melissa Fong. She flew down from Malaysia  and was with us through out. She was our spotter during our practice runs  and made sure we were never hungry nor thirsty through out the day. She got burnt badly from standing out in the sun too long . We both can’t thank her enough for what she has done for us!!

Ah Leong , a friend and owner of WHAT Motorworks, the guy I throw tantrums at and blame whenever there’s no one else for me to blame. I’m glad the car performed flawlessly through out the weekend. Sure we had teething problems the whole of last year but I am sure it is all behind us.Thanks for staying up all night back at the workshop and eating the fried rice and one fried egg I tapaued for us.

Formula Drift Singapore Media day @ Changi Exhibition Center 18/6/2009

dscn1209Cheaka and I were invited down to Singapore once again for the Formula Drift Singapore media day held at the actual site at the Changi exhibition center. Both of us had recently had some work  done on our car, so we found it to be the perfect opportunity to test them on this trip. We decided to bring Leong along this time , just in case something happen though. We arrived at midnight on that day and once again were put up a night that the lovely Hotel RE. This time courtesy of ESPN Singapore. They were informed that there will  be three of us  going down this time, and so the thoughtful people in ESPN   gave us a suite!!

Marcus came over the next morning and brought us to one of his Goodyear Tyre shops down town . He promptly had our cars fitted with fresh  sets of Goodyear Eagle Rev Specs and a couple of pairs more each as spares. Thanks Marcus 🙂

Since we will be organising a drift competition in August in MAEPSMAEPS, we were given the opportunity to test the place out. As the course is fairly huge we thought it would be a good to conduct our own form of testing too. Drift House: Their Cefiro V8 and their SR20 TE71 and me with the Goodyear Duraplus tires.

Goodyear Duraplus tire review @ MAEPS drift course

Designed to provide outstanding mileage on Asia’s roads, Goodyear has launched DuraPlus for the passenger value segment. These tires had been tested on rigorous Thailand roads for 100,000km thus creating a new Goodyear standard for tread life in this segment. With its new TredLife TechnologyTM, Goodyear is said to be able to manufacture a tire which delivers longer mileage without sacrificing any of the safety and performance !

Having heard all this, I was eager to test these tires in Drifting application and was pleased when given 4 pieces of 185/60/14s for this purpose.

The first thing I noticed was the tires were asymmetrical in design which essentially a tire with mix tread patterns or designed and manufactured to put more rubber on one side of the tread than the other in an effort to make one tire out of two different tread patterns. These tires needs to mounted in such a way where there will be an inside and outside thus making tire rotation swaps impossible. However, drifters might see this as an advantage as we no longer need to worry about tire thread directions when bringing spares based on the course ( some drift course tends wear either sides of the tires more thus having us to plan ahead when mounting directional tires on our spares)

Next was the thread design, which incorporated deep designed grooves with what appears to have more rubber in its pattern on the outside shoulder of the tire. This I believe will help in wet conditions where the water could be channelled easily and the tires would be less prone to understeering. I had also noticed the side walls of the tires were softer then others which I reckon to help ‘roll’ the tires to its grippier ouside shoulder when taking a corner!

The MAEPS course had a fairly smooth tarmac and was big enough for me to do 3rd gear 90-100km/h entry drifts.

We first tried out these tires at the rear and later had them on the front too.

As advertised, these tires had a decent amount of grip, even when fitted to the front! At the rear the tires were able to take maximum abuse without any signs of breaking or chunking. Even after going through a few heat cycles , the tires were still intact. And most importantly; the tread wear was a lot less then the other tires that I had used before!! So more drifting and less tire changes. As the course in MAEPS tends to eat the rear passanger side tires more, I am able to just change one side of the asymeterical tires without worrying about not having enough of the correct sides. That’s another plus!!!

This the condition of the left rear tires ( the side the gets worn the most) after an excess of over 20 smoke filled runs and it looked like its good for another 10 more!!! The other tire that I used on this course before this only lasted half of what this tire went through. I was truly amazed with its performance and durability!!.

The subjective nature of Drifting as a competitive sport  makes this sport unique .Unlike other form of motorsport , where speed or time is the main criteria when  deciding the winner or when awarding points. Drifting goes beyond that where subjective matters like style , flair and aggression are also  key factors which no machine or piece of equipment could quantify or evaluate. This is where the  role of  the Judge comes in. Though clipping points and drifting lines are easy to for one to see , the Judge has a tough task of how to judge style, flair and aggression. What makes one person’s style better than the other? Why another’s flair is better than the other? Often these aspects of Judging in a drift competition causes a lot of confusion and at times frustration to participants and spectators  alike. This is where the importance of a driver’s/drifter’s briefing. Though most Judges look out for basically the same thing, they do however put emphasis on different criteria which will reflect on the points they give. Some give more for aggression but others may stress on flair and style. During the drivers briefing is where you would get an  inkling on what the Judge is looking for.

Bombard the Judge with questions. Ask him what is he looking for? Give him scenarios and ask for his judgment based on it. With all that you will get an idea of what the Judge is looking for. So your job is to fulfill that to get maximum points possible.

Tandem or  tsusio is where it  really hits the fan. Imagine this. A Judge with only one pair of eyes has to scrutinized and evaluate  two cars going at each other. Added with the fact ,due to logistics or location , at times  the Judges stand is not located at the  most ideal location .Most of the time he might not have a good vantage point to see what is going on . To make matter worse, sometimes competitions run till its dark  where low light or glare makes  visibility is really low. If you think thats tough , how about ; the tandem participants do not drift as close to one another during entry and approach to the first corner as its the only way to not get caught being cut off  :pdsc_0216

How in the world could he look at both cars simultaneously ? With situations as such, it should not be  surprising if the Judge makes a wrong call. So yes, we as Judges  all are capable of making mistakes.

As a competitor, there are two ways you could go about it; 1) Accept the Judge’s decision and haul your ass out of there as soon as possible and sulk in one corner or 2) Protest..

Protest, if allowed , should be done as soon as the judgment has be made: No point making big issue after the next tandem battle has taken place as this will disrupt the flow of competition. All start marshals are equipped with  walkies which connects directly to the judge or someone sitting next to the judge. So if you have anything to say , tell it to the start marshal. If you are not satisfied ask for permission to go to the judging stand. Again this is to not disrupt those going on for the next run. Only protest when you have concrete evidence ( Video or track marshal) as witness or really feel strongly against the Judges decision . After presenting your case the final decision falls only on the hands of the Judge’s decision. So its either the Judge  accepts  it or you have to accept his. Leave immediately to avoid holding the event back or if the Judge agrees at doing  another run then go to the start  to prepare for another run.

A good example to show a good protest ethic was displayed by Meryvn Mohd  of Federal Tyres ,during the last round of MDC last year. He was unclear why my decision of giving the win to his tandem competitor so he requested to come up to the judges both to make an inquiry.

He came up in a respected manner and asked. I explained it to him and he thanked me and left. This is a very good example of a proper approach any drifter should take ,not so much for agreeing with the judge’s decision but more to the level of professionalism  displayed and the dignity and respect he showed to the judge . Remember ,your actions or behavior you display, will reflect on your sponsors and also more importantly on yourself as a person.

Judges are human too. We are prone to make mistakes like everyone else. Most importantly , these mistakes are not intentional.So please show some respect laaa….

CyberJaya Drift Challenge 16th May 2009

In conjunction with Cyberjaya’s twelve year anniversary , a drift contest organised by Comma motorsport was held at the Cyberjaya Community club on last Saturday.This event was managed by Drift Art which is spear headed by Fyrus , Idris and Oan . Cheaka and I had missed their  last two sessions held there , so we thought that we had better arrive early (11.50 am to be exact) for the 3.30 pm free running prior to the official practice and qualifying to familiarized ourselves to it. We promptly went about setting up our pit as soon as we found a suitable spot and went about inspecting the course. Unlike any other tracks that we had competed in, the Community club course consist of a very short straight followed by a wide long corner which leads to a narrow sharp turn followed by a bumpy chicane. This makes it difficult for drifters to be aggressive during tandem battle on the long wide corner as the following car will most likely be cut off by the leading car going  into the narrow hair pin turn causing them to straighten.

Due to  delays, practice only started at 4.30 which resulted in Cheaka  only having  six runs on this totally foreign track  before having to go for her qualifying run. Due to the nature of the course , the Judge for this competition , Yoong from DCM  had set strict standards  for the Expert category where a mere straightening of the car anytime during the qualifying run, results in  drifter receiving  zero points for their run. This  added even  more pressure on  Cheaka. Running on fresh tires rear tires , Jane had trouble adjusting to the  high grip level of her Goodyear Revspecs. She straighten during her first qualifying run and luck has it ,that even she nailed all the sections of her next run ,she was confused as to where the finishing line was and had stop drifting before the finishing . This  resulted in zeros for both her qualifying run which was a big disappointment to everyone in the team  as the score  certainly does not reflect her drifting level.

I fared a bit better having a few extra runs after having been asked to check the course out prior to the offical practice and gotten a 99 point run  for the first run and a spin of the second run while trying to out do my first attempt.I qualified 2nd highest  . Derek lim qualified 1st as he was more consistent with a 95 and a 99 points run.

The top 16 Tandem  battle for the expert category started at 9 pm with almost all of the lower qualifying drifters ,who were all fairly playing it safe by leaving lots of room between themselves and the leading cars , advancing to the best 8. This trend continued moving on to the next run.Though not as exciting  for the spectators , playing it conservertive was the only way to not get trapped into having your line blocked. My run with Michael Gan went on to a one more time where I made the fatal mistake of being too aggressive while I was trailing which resulted of me straightening when Michael dove into my intended line in the hair pin.  Haiyaa….Anyway, Michael Gan was consistent through out the event and deserved the win.

The event ended with  Rudy Norman taking first place  . Michael Gan second  and  Me third f0r the expert category

In my book these people were the heros of the day..(L-R) Vincent Lim, the guy who rolled over his car and still managed to fight on till fourth placing.. Johari Mat Salleh , definitely the crowd favourite with his consistency and super fast run…Me, err…not hero laa..and Along Bukit Jalil, this dude beat a ‘ well known’ drifter who was driving a more powerful machine, on shredded rear tyres!!
