Sepang Track Day: 1/2/2009

sany0715

After being inspired by Leon’s in car video of a recent track day, we decided to round the guys up and give it a go. Mind you, its been 4 years since I’ve been in Sepang grip driving and thought it would be a refreshing change. So, Ryuk1d, Ivan, Leon, Khong,Melvin, mike xtreme ,Cheaka and I got there to find the pits packed with cars!!

I took the first few laps easy with an over inflated rear tyre, trying to relearn the track before going all out. One benefit I found out about bringing your car out on the track is all the short comings of your ride becomes obvious. My lack of braking power was the most prominent out of the list though it never got worse or face  any fade.( It was  just crap throughout :))  Next was  the escalating oil tempt; an oil cooler is a definite must as I was hitting temperatures above 140. The water tempt was good, hovering between 90 and 98, but it was the oil temperature that had forced me to limit my runs to only three laps before having to pit in. Next was my  belt  slipping problem, it was most apparent when  hitting high revs. The funny thing is , I had not noticed this problem while drifting  which I suspect  is due to excessive tyre noise ( either that or I am an idiot 😀 )

There was a really nice AE86 parked at the rear of the pit that day which so happens to belong to mike xtreme’s friend..Really love the rims!!

Happy Chinese New Year: The Civic

sany0702-1

Chinese New Year is one of my favorite festive holidays that we have here in Malaysia. The mere fact that most businesses closes for at least a week forces mine to do so too. What makes it even better are the roads  in town are practically deserted as most have gone out of state for their celebration. So I took  the opportunity to meet up with an old friend ,whom is now a  proud owner of a ‘mildly’ modded B16A powered Civic.

This friend of mine go way back as I have known since I first started working upon graduation. Though working in different companies, we both shared the same office building and being new, I always made it a point to get to work early. Most often I would arrive even before the office is actually opened. So most of the time I would be downstairs at the parking lot ,waiting. This was when I spotted this friend of mine. I had noticed that he was forever tinkering under the bonnet of his car;he was either wiping or tightening something. It was a dark blue Toyota LE running on an AE92 supercharged engine.I remember asking him tons of questions about the engine and how do they compared with other engines. He would gladly entertained me but always ended with ” but its not as fast as a V Tec laa…”. You see this friend of mine have this fixation on Hondas , he would go on and on about it, talked about how fast there are in Batu Tiga ( this was when Saturday night fever CCT sessions were still around) , about the chance encounter he had with them on the streets and so on. Even after owning a VR4 powered Satria, he still insist that the B16A is still  the ultimate!

Many years past and he finally got himself one. We did occasionally meet up after that and he would give me on an update of his modifications each time . This ranges from engine , right down to the chasis. I suppose it would be safer to not list them down here 😉

So, naturally when I had my car transplanted with an engine smiliar to his old LE, we  both were  dying to compare their peformance against each other….

….and boy we sure had fun doing it

Perak Super Series Track Set up video

Here’s a video Wanbra took of me trying out various lines to set up the placement of the rear clipping zone.. the fact that the AE86 had a badly leaking exhaust manifold and a stuffed up flexi exhaust joint (strangely, the thing unraveled into a ball of wires  inside the joint itself) didn’t help one bit  with  the power hence the clutch kicking(s) during mid drift.

The in car video shows how hard it is to turn the steering. Unlike my AE86 coupe, the hatchback has unusually tight/hard steering action..I’ve tried everything from changing steering racks, reducing caster and chamber to changing lower arm but to no avail. Even AE86 experts such as Ivan Lau and Charlie are at the loss at offering a solution. So if anyone out there who could  help…One thing good though, my arms are super tone from the work out .

PERAK SUPER SERIES DRIFT PRACTICE AND OPEN DRIFT DAY

Perak Super Series : the Drift challenge incident..

dsc_00271I have to admit, this is only the second time I’ve been to the Dato Sagor track in Kampung Gajah but during  both occasions   I  always had and always will, have the impression that the inhabitants of this serene kampung were nothing short of being the most  hospitable and friendliest bunch of people I have ever met. Locals were ever so helpful whenever we were at the track; offering to buy us meals or drinks , helping us carry our tyres during changes even after we insist them not doing so. In fact, when Cheaka had some issues with her wheel spacer , one of the workshops nearby allowed us full excess to his tools and bolts without even batting an eye lid.

It is so unfortunate that the  incident had happened, some people got hurt, some  will get into trouble and the whole community has gotten a bad rep. I seriously do not know what the future  will hold for the Sagor track as far as events are concerned but all I implore everyone , especially those who weren’t there during the incident, to not  make things worse by your  speculations  and  accusasions..Enough said

Here are some photo taken of Pasir Salak Resort where we (Wanbra , Dzal , Cheaka and I) stayed for 3 days and 2 nights.A kampung style chalet , located in a middle of a village , across the river from the track ..

Authentic looking kampung style chalet…the only problem is every chalet looks the same..needless to say if it weren’t for the numbers we wouldn’t have been able to find our way back..

Drifting in Singapore

One of our Singaporean forumer made this statement in one of her postings..”drift kat sg ni still like macam museum sikit ….just demos here and there …controlled areas…biasalah hor ..singapore …wat can u expect...”  which roughly translated means “drifting in singapore is a bit like a museum..just demos here and there..controlled areas…thats usually the case..its singapore ..wat can u expect…”..well I beg to differ 🙂 .. here is some pics taken of ,now Cheaka’s car ripping it up in Singapore.. there were a few other Singaporeans with me at that time but I think I better not post it , just in case 😉
