ACE Drift Challenge 2011 rd3 @AFamosa 23rd-24th July 2011

ACE Drift Challenge Round 3 weekend started early for us; the drifters from Drift Garage Singapore had booked a private session for themselves a day before the weekend and had graciously included us . The session proved to a fun filled event with the majority of them improving  tremendously since I last  drifted with them in Mardi. Joining in the fun was also our returning drift student from the states , Bob, who had just ungone an intensive Figure 8 training conducted by the famous Team Orange in Ebisu Japan (heeheeheehe).Having to stretch the limited amount of allocated  tyres, for the 3 days had forced us to resort to drift on  used tyres from past events. The term going fast nowhere comes into mind especially when our tyres we down to the threads but in all honesty, a number of the Singaporean were so fast that the outcome of being left behind even with fresh new tyres would not suprise me.

The next day was the  official practice day for round 3 with Jane and I still going through our last few pieces of used tyres. As the clipping points were still not placed I basically took it easy and spent time “hanging out”  at our pit. Joining us today ( they actually arrived on Friday night) is the lovely couple Cheryl and Mike which proved to be entertaining to say the least. My sister inlaw (Jane’s sister) and family also arrived today bringing along with them our daughter! With such company who has time to drift?? Anyway, Jane’s transmission broke (again) thus forcing Kian and Boy to come a day earlier to get the box fixed for tomorrow’s main event.

The next day  ,with the clipping points finally being placed we could now begin practice. The session proved to be valueble as a suspected  fault in the  S13 became apparent; Everytime I put the countersteered  into a full lock position, especially while tackling the rear clipping zone, the car would spin!!(hmm FD Singapore 2011??)  After closer inspection , we found that the front wheels were locking up on the castor rods  whenever it was in full lock!! Thankfully we had wider spacers available and simply slap them on and there were no more spins.

Jane , thankfully, had no more gearbox issues and were able to churn out a string on solid runs during her practice!!

Qualifying had Jane in 13th place with me placing 1st into the top 32!!

Unfortunately for Jane as shewas knocked out in the Best 24 tsuiso battle due to her excessive worn front tyres which had her plowing through in understeer into the first turn for both runs.

I faired better going through best 16 to best 8 then into top 4 and to the final where I managed to display two clear dominant runs against my opponent Ah Fai to win the 3rd round of ACE Drift Challenge 2011

A cool huge  throphy was give to me for qualifying first!!

and another throphy for winning round 3

Yipeeee

My sister inlaw ( Jane’s sister) and family were there for the weekend too!!

Many thanks to The Team: ( L-R) Voon: Our martial art expert , Kian: Head mechanic who managed to fix everything in a jiffy , Boy: mechanic and our “mat-guard-loh, me, Johanna : our daughter and human water shield, Jane, Cheryl: our video camera lady and babysitter and Mike: my spotter and CIMB representitive!!

Cyberjaya International Gymkhana Challenge Round 3, 26th June 2011

A fun filled event participated by the who’s who of autocross/gymkhana in Malaysia like Mickey Teoh, Alvin, Johnson , Mitch and Adam was held in the Cyberjaya Sport arena parking space.

Unlike the traditional gymkhana event, drivers are required to go through qualifying where the top 8 fastest time  of the two catagories FF and FR/AWD are to go against each other in a heads up match. Both tackling mirror courses , side by side and switching over to decide the winner.

Jane , who qualified 5th fastest of the day had to go against veteren autocrosser , Johnson Tan which led to four re runs(!!) before Jane finally admitting defeat  due to an error on her figure 8 in the course!

Truly impressive considering the car she was driving was still in drift set up and she will definately be back for more!!

Once again, held at the SIngapore F1 Paddock, the 2011 edition of Formula D singapore had Cheaka and I were egar to begin this session after a not so good ( :p) 2010 FD season last year!!Practice went great for both of us . The changes I had made in the S13 proved to have  work beautifully and Jane was getting the hang of the course by her third run of the day. However luck has it that the weather didn’t hold when the next group went out for practice and it stayed that way till qualifying! This had our group going out for qualifying on the unfamiliar wet slippery surface thus it was no suprise that half our group didn’t qualify due to spins , as Jane did   or did qualified lowly, as I did. Oh well…

Tandem practice went great the next day but during my first tsuiso battle in the best 32, I made the fatal mistake of diving in too early upon entry while following and did an uncharacteristic  half spin while leading causing my opponent, Koh Kae to hit me in the rear . I apologies furiously as I managed to rip apart the whole front of his cerfiro, taking the intercooler and oil cooler out in the process!! It was a silly mistake I made but I still left me wondering what made my rear suddenly go light while at the hair pin!! Oh well..(no 2)

Anyways so much for that but on the good note I was very pleased at how I have finally got SLOW’s handling sorted out( finally) and Jane though didnt qualify , was able to show case  her ever improving skills and maturity and was able to mix with the big boys!!

We’ll be  back!!!

Batu Pahat Ultra Racing Challenge 2011@ Johore 6th-7th May 2011

Its has been a while since we last competed in Johore and were excited to hear that Batu Pahat would be having one this weekend. Due to  budget constrains , Jane and I decide to ‘rough it out’ by just going by ourselves sans crew. To add to that, I even brought the road S13 to compete with  due to its lower running cost ( the competition s13 was being painted anyways). Inspite of all that , Jane and I had a blast that weekend. It really reminded us of the time when we both first started drifting; Having to take care of everything from logistics to competiting.Things went surprisingly smooth but of course it would be even nicer if we had the usual crew with us ;).

Anyways , this competition is the classic example of great performance but poor results. Jane kicked butt through out the whole weekend with her smokey, high speed drifting but missed out on the best 16 by two spots due to ECU problems during both of her runs! Her car bogged down midway through her drift on the 2 runs she had! This problem is being recitified at the moment

For me, I had a ton of fun practicing tsusio’ing  the whole weekend ,managed to  qualified 1st but was caught at the hairpin during my best 16 run due to a different-from-qualifying-run-line run by my opponent. I was totally to be blamed and was kicking myself silly for it besides, the opponent was a friend of mine so it didnt matter that he got to advance 🙂 So this gave me the oppurtinity to kick back and hang out with Jane  at the judging stand and poke fun at the judges and MC throught out the competition!!

This weekend also gave me the oppurtinity to test out another Liquid Moly product !!

As you all know, we have been using the Liqui Moly Octane Plus the whole of 2010 which I attribute to the reliability of my Turbo AE86  which is running on pump fuel. What this product does is it bumps the octane level of the fuel when added into your  fuel tank .This results in the fuel burning cooler which essentially elimanates detonation or knocking. The road S13  and Janes 180sx which runs of pump fuel , worked wonderfully the whole weekend with a bottle of it in  the fuel tank.

The next product that I got to use was the Liqui Moly Ceratec Engine Oil additive . Quiet honestly ,both me and my mechanic are a bit anal about engine oils . We have tried a number of products but we ended up using to our usual choice of engine lubricant which I have been using for almost 13 years!! Anyway,  VS Look , the LiquidMoly Johore Baru distributer came to me and suggested I pour it into my engine to see its benefits of reducing friction, thus reducing wear and engine tempreture. He even brought Chester Lim , a drifter/mechanic/business owner whom patiently explained the properties of the additive and assured me I will be happy with the result. Due to the high engine oil tempretures I was experiencing the whole weekend,I decided to give it a shot and poured the product into the engine .I  let it idle for about  10 mins (the recommended proper priming process takes a few engine heat up and cool down cycles) and saw the result was apparent immediately when i took the car out for my practice runs!!. Usually I would run on a hotter oil tempreture as compared  to my water tempt.  But with Ceretec, my engine oil was either similar or slighty lower than my water tempt even after a few spritied runs ! I was told that the coating that the ceretac leaves in the engine internals will last for about 3-4 oil changes before having to be reapplied!! I would be updating you guys on its effect after a long term use but at the moment , this stuff rocks!!

Last but not least the Goodyear Aysmetric tyres; this drift course had the tendency to wear down the driver’s side tyres more than the other. The beauty of the running Asymeterics are you could just switch the rims and tyres without having to worryabout rotation. So that exactly what Jane and I did after a few laps thus giving us even thread wear and extended drifting time as compared to those running rotationals!! Check out the wear!! Perfect!

FXopen Final Round @ SpeedCity 25th,26th,27th Mar 2011

Quiet possibly the most anticipated event in the Malaysian drift calender, the FX Open Finals 2011 proved to be a derisory  exhibition of what a drift event should not be.

I shall not cheapen the moment as this event was Jane’s debut with her newly acquired sponsor RedBull Malaysia  which she qualified 14th out of 20 other drifters ,placing her into the Best 16. Along side her our main sponsor Goodyear, she completed the whole line up of Goodyear Malaysia Drifters to qualify for this event!

Congrats Cheaka!! Unfortunately, she blew her engine…yes again, while  battling the top 16 tandem runs thus ending her day.

As for me, based on the overwhelming hits on our blog since the event, I am sure a lot of you are dying to hear the low down ,straight to the point opinion of what happen to me while fighting for the converted Top 4 placing during the event. If you guys are expecting my comments about the sub standard level of judging that  makes a mockery of the sport, I  shall  not give you the pleasure!!  Don’t be expecting to hear crap from me about this event  !! Don’t look for it here ..do your own searching !!! 😉   All I have to say is ” When in  doubt..Keep Drifting Fun!!!” It makes the feeling of unjust  bearable…

Ooh before I forget..Speedcity rawks!! Can’t wait for Saturday Night drifting there!!!!

KBS Malaya Drift Battle Round 2@ Putrajaya 19th-20th March 2011

To put it plainly; the second round of the KBS Malaya Drift Battle competition was a bitter sweet experience for Team Goodyear Sync Optima. Bitter for Jane  for her engine decided to ‘kick the bucket’ mid way through the practice session on day one ! It was even more disappointing as  Jane had gotten the course down and was  drifting it worthy  of a top 6 qualification run! It was so unfortunate as she was really looking forward to this event as it was to be the first time she will be  flying the colors of her new sponsor ,RedBull along side our title sponsor Goodyear! Rest assured, Jane will bounce back and will do everyone proud on the up coming events…I am sure of it.

This event was sweet for me as this is my first win for the year 2011 but also this marks the first ever 1st place finish  in a drifting competition on Goodyear  Eagle F1 Asymmetric tyres  in Malaysia!!!

Though qualifying was in the dry, which I managed to bag 2nd place, the majority of the tandem battles was done in the wet/semi wet condition. As most of you know, the Asymmetric is phenomenal in the wet and this is what I attribute as the major contribution to my success in this competition!! I had grip in parts of the courses while others on other tyres had none. Thanks  Goodyear 🙂

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Anyway, my apologies for the lack of photos as we our resident photographer ,Kevin Boey, was busy taking part in a  Gymkhana event held at the parking space next to the drift course. Kevin got 8th in his class which isn’t too bad!!

Top 4 parade

Jane’s handiwork on my broken bumper…lots love and cable ties were put into it 🙂

Receiving my 1st place trophy..Yipeee!!!! Not only that, I got two more prizes for Best Performer and Best Disciplined Drifter ( that’s a first )!!!!!

.…..which I decided to present to our Sync Optima teammates during  on our own mock prize giving ceremony: Cheryl Chew gets the Best Discipline trophy for studying hard , turning up for classes and on track for graduation this May, Mike Khong gets the Best Performer for somehow being able to avoid getting his lazy ass kicked out of  uni for all these time! Such a performer , he is !! Last but not least Jane gets the 1st place throphy, for being my partner, spotter and my teammate in everything…oh yeah, the handsome dude in the green shirt is ‘Datuk’ Terence Lim who got 2nd in FR category in  the Gymkhana event. He was reluctant to have his photo taken but I thought he was too sexy to not be included  .Unfortunately Kevin Boey is not in the picture as he was at the pit taking care of our stuff…thanks buddy !!
